The Daily Quran Recitation Portion (Wird)

In the Arabic Quranic tradition, a Wird refers to reading a portion of the Quran daily. Every Muslim is encouraged to create a personal schedule for daily Quran recitation. 

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

" اقْرَؤُوا القُرْآنَ فإنَّه يَأْتي يَومَ القِيامَةِ شَفِيعًا لأَصْحابِهِ"

“Recite the Quran, for it will come as an intercessor for its companions on the Day of Judgment.” (Sahih Muslim)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite the Quran frequently, day and night. He would sometimes spend long hours in prayer at night, even reciting chapters like Al-Baqarah, Aal-Imran, and An-Nisa in a single unit of prayer.

The Virtue of Reciting the Quran

Reciting the Holy Quran is one of the greatest acts of worship a person can do to draw closer to Allah, the Almighty.

The noble companion Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“The best act of worship is the recitation of the Quran.”

This narration was recorded by Imam Al-Suyuti in Al-Jamiʿ.

In another authentic hadith collected by Al-Bukhari, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

خَيْرُكُمْ مَن تَعَلَّمَ القُرْآنَ وعَلَّمَهُ

"The best amongst you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it"

This hadith tells us that the highest and most honored Muslims in the sight of Allah are those who learn the Quran, through reading, memorizing, reciting it with care of tajwid rules, and then pass that knowledge on to others.

The Virtues of Reciting the Holy Quran: Insights from Three Verses

Allah, the Almighty, says in Surah Fatir:

{إن الذين يتلون كتاب الله وأقاموا الصلاة وأنفقوا مما رزقناهم سرا وعلانية يرجون تجارة لن تبور}

"Those who recite the Book of Allah 'The holy Qur’an', perform the prayers, and give in charity from what We provide for them, secretly and openly, hope for a commerce that will never fail."

Allah SWT says in Surah Al-Qamar:

{وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ}

"We made the Quran easy to learn. Is there anyone who will learn?"

Al-Bukhari and Muslim also reported another beautiful hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him):
“The one who is skilled in the Quran will be with the noble, righteous scribes (angels), and the one who reads the Quran with difficulty and stumbles through it will have a double reward.”
